Middle School Schedule Change in 2009-10
Reported by 204-info@ipsd.org on 4/25/08

Presented by Superintendent Stephen Daeschner

The traditional curriculum of a middle school education provides each student with a healthy balance of course variety and depth. In Indian Prairie School District 204, representatives from the teachers' union and district administrators began discussions several years ago to explore if students would benefit from a revised middle school schedule. In the fall of 2006, they teamed together with the goal to maximize the quality of classroom instruction in our middle schools.

  • Increase the amount of instruction time in the academic core classes so as to maintain high standards in the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, reading, and social studies.
  • It will allow for greater interaction between students and our instructors - more time to talk in-depth about subject matter and time to introduce new topics.
  • Add minutes to exploratory courses such as music, art, foreign language, computers, applied technology, and family and consumer sciences
  • Does not limit student class options
These changes will be utilitized:
  • Reduced passing periods
  • Moving to a 30-minute lunch period
  • Embedding the advisory/connections coursework into the core curriculum
The minutes gained from changing advisory/connections remain flexible and can be used by the core team of teachers in many ways to best meet the needs of students.

A wonderful addition to the schedule is teachers will have one non-classroom period devoted to meeting the needs of students. It will be an opportunity for students seeking enrichment and those needing academic assistance to receive it directly from a teacher.

We plan to introduce this new middle school schedule in two separate phases. The 2008-09 academic year will serve as the first phase and it will focus on staff development with our teachers. The second phase will take place in the 2009-10 academic year and that will be the time that it will be introduced to our students.

Bolingbrook among top places to live in US
BOLINGBROOK – The village received nationwide attention this week when the August edition of Money Magazine named it to its 2008 top 100 Places to Live in the United States list.

Bolingbrook comes in at No. 32.

“Not too many places near Chicago can go by ‘village’ anymore, but Bolingbrook claims the title proudly,” the magazine writes. “It’s a relatively new suburb of Chicago, having been incorporated only in 1965. Since then, growth has exploded – so much so that Ikea brought its second Illinois location here three years ago.

Comparison factors
The magazine compares 44 indicators against averages for the other 99 best places.

When compared to the best places average, the village has 167 more restaurants within 15 miles, 32 extra bars within 15 miles and 147 more public golf courses within 30 miles.

While the diabetes rate in Bolingbrook is 0.6 percent higher than the average, the hypertension rate is 0.8 percent lower than average, and the percent of residents with a health plan is 0.8 percent higher, according to the magazine.

Particularly noteworthy for Mayor Roger Claar is the village racial diversity index, which stands at 188.3, compared to 104.2 for other top cities and 100 for the country.
