Fun Things to Do With Kids in Chicago

Sep 12, 2022

What comes to mind when you think of Chicago? Jazz, skyscrapers, deep dish pizza? While all of those are great things, there is so much more to experience with your family.

In fact, Chicago is home to some amazing family-friendly attractions that are sure to keep everyone entertained. From zoos and museums to amusement parks and botanical gardens, Chicago has something for everyone. So if you're looking for fun things to do with your kids in the Windy City, look no further!

For Toddlers

Kiddos under the age of 5 are such an easy age group to entertain. They're still young enough that they're fascinated by the world around them and love learning new things. That's why places like the Lincoln Park Zoo and Shedd Aquarium are perfect for toddlers.

They can explore all sorts of different animals, both land and sea, and learn about their habitats and diets. Both have various seasonal events and educational programs, so there's always something new to see and do.

If your little one is into trains, the Chicago Botanic Garden has a model railroad that runs through its grounds. They also have a children's garden, interactive water features, and more. It's the perfect place to let your toddler safely run around and explore nature.

Heck, even just a walk through your Overstreet Builders' Signature Neighborhood can be a great activity for young children! Our neighborhoods are designed to be family-friendly, with plenty of green space, and our spectacular club houses, indoor fitness facilities, gleaming pools, sports courts and more will provide a much-needed escape from the sun or the chilly weather.

For Elementary School Aged Kids

What young kid doesn't love playing at a park? Chicago has some of the coolest playgrounds around! From huge slides and swings to zip lines and rock climbing walls, there's truly something any age group can enjoy. Maggie Daley Park and Centennial Park in Naperville are the places to be — your kids will be entertained for hours!

Navy Pier is also a great place for families with school-aged children. In addition to rides and games, there are also museums, theaters, and restaurants. It's the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

If they're into sports, take them to a Chicago Bulls or Blackhawks game. They'll love watching their favorite players compete on the court or ice and maybe even catch a souvenir ball or puck

For Tough-To-Please Teenagers

If your kids are tweens or teens, they might be interested in some of the more unique attractions Chicago has to offer. The city is home to some amazing street art, which they can explore on a graffiti tour. Or, if they're into the paranormal, sign them up for a ghost tour where they'll learn about some of the most haunted spots in the city.

If you have an artsy teenager, they'll love the Art Institute of Chicago. With over 300,000 works of art, it's one of the largest and most popular museums in the world. They can explore different time periods and styles, and even take part in hands-on workshops.

And finally, no trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to the top of the Willis Tower to see it all. Your teens can step out onto The Sky Deck, a glass box that extends 4 feet out from the 103rd floor, for an incredible view of the city.
