Preparing Your Home for Springtime in Chicago

Mar 30, 2020

Spring Cleaning takes on new meaning this year. While most of us learn to navigate the new normal of being at home as much as possible, we are also now all too keenly aware of how germs spread. Cleaning your home will not only help in the fight against Covid-19, it will also help you feel more comfortable. Less clutter and mess has been proven to ease anxiety and help provide a sense of calm. We could all use some of that. With this in mind, we’ve developed a checklist to help you clean your house not just for spring, but for your health and safety. Tackling the whole list all at once might be overwhelming, so break it down and do a little each day.

Dust
Typically dusting is a no brainer, but there are plenty of nooks and crannies throughout your home that can get absolutely caked in dust if overlooked for a long period of time. Be thorough in your hunt for dust bunnies, cleaning up high, down low, underneath and behind, leave no area undusted!

  • TV/Entertainment Centers – Don’t forget to also wipe down all the wiring!
  • Under Chairs
  • Behind/Underneath Tables
  • Wall Corners
  • Tops of Bookshelves
  • Cabinets

Shine
Give your silver collection the shining it deserves but probably doesn’t receive nearly enough. Rather than simply just wiping down your silver, take the time to put some elbow grease into polishing your collection and really get that sparkle to come through. We recommend using Simple Shine on your jewelry on a regular basis to help it keep it’s glow.

  • Silverware
  • Jewelry
  • Knobs

Vacuum
Get creative with your vacuuming and use your vacuum cleaner for other places and things you don’t normally consider vacuuming to help get rid of any dust particles that might be lurking around. For instance, if you have curtains that are too big for your washer and dryer, you can give them a quick refresh with your vacuum extension and a few sprays of Febreze Fabric Refresher. Other places to consider getting creative with your vacuum cleaner:

  • Mattresses (remove your sheets first!)
  • Upholstery: couch, curtains, pillows

Windows
Spring brings April showers and May flowers and also lots and lots of pollen! If the view from your windows is starting to look rather foggy, it’s time to rid your windows of pollen and other dirt. Windex can be used both on the inside and outside of your windows and for an added layer of protection, use Pledge on the window frame to keep the dirt and grime at bay. Swiffer also offers a great dusting tool to get in those hard to reach nooks and crannies!

  • Windows
  • Window/Door Frames
  • Blinds

Electronics
Electronics can often get overlooked when it comes to cleaning and sanitizing items around the house, but they’re also some of the most highly touched items, and can harbor a lot of bacteria when left out of the cleaning routine. It’s important to be meticulous and really make sure to clean all crevices and around buttons. Don’t leave these extremely high touch devices off your cleaning list!

  • Phone
  • Remote Controls (TV, video game controllers, etc)
  • Consoles
  • Speakers
  • Computer
  • Keyboard
