Summer Is Finally Here! Protect Your Home From the Heat.
The long-awaited summer months have arrived, and with them comes that classic love/hate relationship with the heat. In the Midwest, high temperatures can be just as threatening to your home as the bitter cold of winter.
But don’t worry, Overstreet Builders has you covered with practical tips to protect your home and conserve energy during the hottest months of the year.
Inside the Home
HVAC System Maintenance
One of the easiest and most important steps in keeping your HVAC running efficiently is changing the air filter. Depending on your system, this may need to be done monthly.
Don’t forget to clean your A/C unit! Leaves, twigs, grass clippings—even pet hair—can collect around the unit and restrict airflow. Gently spray it with a garden hose and remove large debris by hand.
Check Your Insulation
Uneven temperatures, high energy bills, or hot/cold spots on your walls or ceilings may be signs of poor attic insulation.
Start by:
•Sealing any gaps where insulation has settled
•Ensuring no floor joists are exposed
•Confirming attic insulation is at least 12 inches thick
This will help keep your home cooler and your utility bills lower.
Seal Windows & Doors
It’s just as important to seal gaps in the summer as it is in the winter. Check:
•Weatherstripping around windows and door frames
•Caulking for small cracks
•Spray foam for larger gaps
This prevents warm air from entering and cool air from escaping, keeping your energy usage in check.
Adjust Your Ceiling Fans
Make sure your ceiling fans are set to rotate counterclockwise during summer. This creates a wind-chill effect that helps push cool air down, improving comfort and efficiency.
Upgrade to a Smart Thermostat
While a programmable or smart thermostat might cost a little more upfront, it can save big on your electric bill. Set your thermostat to adjust temperatures based on your schedule, especially when you're away from home.
Control Humidity Levels
High humidity levels not only make your house feel warmer and force your A/C work harder, but they can also cause damage to your home. Excess moisture creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which can damage walls, flooring, insulation, and even furniture. One effective way to control humidity is investing in a dehumidifier. Be sure to use your dehumidifier in areas that are prone to high humidity, such as basements.
Outside the Home
Clean Your Gutters
Clogged gutters can lead to water damage and insulation issues. Clear out old leaves, nests, and debris to prevent overflow and moisture buildup.
A quick visual inspection and a bit of ladder time now can save you big later.
Inspect Your Roof
Summer storms and heat can wear down your roof quickly. Start by:
•Inspecting shingles for damage
•Checking for gaps around vents and chimneys
•Addressing small repairs early to avoid bigger issues
Regular maintenance keeps your home protected and energy-efficient.
